Self-host tailrmade

You can run tailrmade on your own computer or server without the tailrmade cloud services. In self-hosted mode:

  • apps and preferences are stored locally in the browser
  • cloud accounts, cloud storage, and cloud sharing are disabled
  • API requests that require CORS bypassing use the local Companion

Download a self-hosted bundle

Prebuilt self-hosted bundles are available from the Tailrmade bundles shared folder.

  1. Open the shared folder.
  2. Download the latest ZIP for your operating system.
  3. Extract the entire ZIP to a permanent folder.

Do not run the executable from inside the ZIP. The extracted files must remain together. A complete bundle contains:

tailrmade/
tm-companion.exe
.env
tm/
index.html
main.js
assets/
...

The executable may not include .exe on macOS or Linux.

Start tailrmade

Windows

  1. Open the extracted folder.
  2. Run tm-companion.exe.
  3. If Windows displays a security warning, confirm that you downloaded the file from the Tailrmade shared folder before allowing it to run.

Tailrmade opens automatically at http://127.0.0.1:6655. You can reopen or quit it from the Tailrmade icon in the Windows system tray.

macOS and Linux

Open a terminal in the extracted folder and run:

chmod +x tm-companion
./tm-companion

Then open http://127.0.0.1:6655.

Keep the Companion running while you use Tailrmade.

note

Some nodes load dependencies or contact external APIs at runtime. Those features still require internet access even when tailrmade itself is self-hosted.

How the Companion is used

The tailrmade Companion forwards API requests that browsers would otherwise block because of CORS. It also supports local API-key substitution and local AI providers.

The downloaded bundle includes the Companion and the Tailrmade frontend. The Companion:

  • serves Tailrmade at http://127.0.0.1:6655
  • forwards API requests that browsers would otherwise block because of CORS
  • substitutes locally stored API keys
  • handles requests to configured local AI providers

Self-hosted Tailrmade automatically uses the local Companion. You do not need to change the Companion location.

Confirm the Companion is reachable by opening http://localhost:6655/ping.

Configure local API keys

Edit the .env file beside the Companion executable:

openai=your_api_key
weather=your_api_key
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your_api_key
DEEPSEEK_API_KEY=your_api_key
GEMINI_API_KEY=your_api_key
OPENAI_API_KEY=your_api_key
MOONSHOT_API_KEY=your_api_key

HTTP nodes can reference a value using $TM_KEY{key_name}:

{
"Authorization": "Bearer $TM_KEY{openai}"
}

Restart the Companion after changing .env. Do not share this file with other people.

Update tailrmade

  1. Download the latest ZIP from the Tailrmade bundles shared folder.
  2. Quit the running Companion.
  3. Extract the new bundle into a new folder.
  4. Copy your existing .env file into the new folder.
  5. Start the new Companion executable.

Keep the previous folder until you have confirmed that the new version works. Your locally saved apps remain in the browser profile and are not stored in the bundle folder.

warning

Clearing your browser's site data for 127.0.0.1:6655 may remove locally saved Tailrmade apps and preferences. Export important apps before clearing browser data.

Advanced settings

The default port is 6655. The downloaded Tailrmade frontend expects this port, so changing it is not recommended.

Set the TM_NO_OPEN environment variable to 1 before starting the Companion to prevent it from opening a browser automatically.

Troubleshooting

An API request says the Companion is unreachable

  • Make sure the Companion is running.
  • Open http://localhost:6655/ping.
  • Check that another application is not already using port 6655.
  • Restart the Companion after editing .env.

The Companion starts but tailrmade returns 404

The Companion did not find a frontend package. Make sure a tm directory containing index.html is beside the executable. If it is missing, extract the complete ZIP again rather than copying only the executable.

The browser does not open

Open http://127.0.0.1:6655 manually.

My locally saved apps are missing after an update

Use the same browser and browser profile that you used previously. Local apps are stored by the browser for 127.0.0.1:6655, not in the extracted bundle folder.

Build from source

The Tailrmade source repository is private. Source builds are available only to authorized contributors with repository access. Other users should install the prebuilt ZIP from the shared folder.

The Companion source remains available at PlugAndPlayground/pnp-companion-2.
